{{Book Review}} Ishtar’s Odyssey | A Family Story for Advent

A new Advent family devotional from the author of Jotham’s Journey! Fourth in a set of Advent adventure books for families, Ishtar’s Odyssey follows the ten-year-old son of a Persian wise man as their caravan follows a star across the desert. Ishtar would just as soon stay in the comfort of the palace, but slowly he learns that there’s much to see, do, and learn in this world that can’t be experienced in school. He eventually meets Jotham, Bartholomew, and Tabitha as he follows his father and uncles in their search for a newborn king.

Arnold Ytreeide’s family advent devotionals have become a much-loved Christmas tradition, enjoyed by multiple generations. With over 100,000 in print they include Jotham’s JourneyBartholomew’s Passage, and Tabitha’s Travels.

*My Review*
This book is a nice book geared for Advent. Each day has a part of the story of Ishtar that includes a short devotional at the end.

The contents of this book are delightfully done with great illustrations.

It would be a great family devotional, but, it could also be done individually. I would say this book is geared to children between the ages of 8 and 12, maybe 6.

I think that this book wonderful and is a great educational way to discuss Advent all the while doing family devotion time.

Too many people, too much snow, and too little room should be a recipe for disaster | {{Book Review}} An Endless Christmas

Christmas takes a very different turn when the guests of honor break up instead of announcing their engagement. Trapped with his family, they learn that love looks different than either imagined. Both in their eighties, Dodie and Wilson Binder celebrate every Christmas as if it were their last. This year, their grandson Micah is planning to ask his girlfriend, Katie, to marry him so they can celebrate with the whole family. But things go very wrong when she says, "no." Now they are stuck. Too many people, too much snow, and too little room should be a recipe for disaster. But sometimes too much is just enough. Especially when it's Christmas.

*My Review*

It's not often anymore that I can sit down and read a book cover to cover in one sitting.

I read "An endless Christmas" by Cynthia Ruchti in a couple of hours(I should have been sleeping) and I loved every bit of it.
I gave this book 4 stars just because it is way too short for me. I love this story and I wish that is was a full novel instead of a novella.
I was left wanting MORE. I love Cynthia's writing style, she is very talented. If you are looking for a nice read, then you should check out "An Endless Christmas"

{{Book Review}} Midnight Visitors

*About the Book*
Miriam was glad to be warm and cozy. There were so many people in the town but it was nice and peaceful inside her cowshed. Little did she know that she would soon be joined by Midnight Visitors . . . and not just any old visitors!

Snuggle up and enjoy the warm, soft feel the art and narrative bring to this delightful Christmas picture book with a difference.

*My Review*
"The Midnight Visitors" is a cute story of the night that Jesus was born from the view of a cow, named Miriam. I sat down  and read this book first to make sure it was something I thought my 6 & 4 year old would enjoy. Each night we ready a story from 3 different books, one being a children's Bible & while we love reading those, it was fun to read a new Christmas book to them!

Miriam had a few other visitors before Mary and Joseph. When I read the book the first time...there was a point where I was starting to wonder if they would even show up. They do appear towards the end, after Miriam has already taken in a few other friends.

There were a few things I didn’t like; 1) when the shepherds show up one of them calls out to Mary and says “hey lady.” I’m not sure why he is made to be rude but it was kind of unnecessary in my opinion.
2) I  thought it was strange that even though they say Mary is pregnant, she doesn’t look pregnant at all, not sure why the illustrator would choose to do something like that.

In the end my girls really liked this book. The Midnight Visitors is a cute version of story.

The Day the Stormtroopers Invaded | {{Location Review}} Lego Brick Universe Convention in Irving, Texas

The day started like any other "normal" saturday. Alarm went off, I woke up & tried to wake my husband. He mumbled something and rolled over and went back to sleep. *grrr* I let him sleep for another 10 mins and tried waking him again. "wake up!", I said..."whhhhhhy???" he moaned..."Brick Universe is at the convention center!! LET'S GO!"...So he slowly got out of bed and got ready, while I fed the girls a quick breakfast and got them dressed. Once we were dressed and loaded in the car...we headed to Las Colinas not knowing what to fully expect.

(Irving Convention Center in Las Colinas)

Once we were inside we saw the sign telling us where the legos were! My two younger girls have been excited for this all week(and secretly so have I)!

....and then we saw them...the Stormtroopers....
(My 5 yr old)

...They were everywhere...
(the family + Stormtroopers)

and of course no invasion is complete without #selfies!

Now that the silliness is out of the way, Here is my actual review! After we showed them our tickets(on my phone), we walked in and instantly saw this tiger.

Then we saw the rest of all of the amazing things there. So many talented people. I was evena able to get a few pictures of the builders with their legos.

(Helicarrier piece.)

(This Pearl Harbor piece. This might just be my favorite one there.)

There were several tables set up where you could purchase sets, pieces etc, as well as a few "building stations" so you could play with the legos and make your own creations. I took a ton of photos, way too many to add here on the blog, but I'll put them up on my facebook page in case anyone wants to check them out.

We'll be attending again next year and this time we'll make sure we buy some cool stuff!

I received free tickets from U.S. Family Guide in exchange for my honest opinion. I am not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Authentic multiethnic breads from the New York City bakery with a mission | {{Book Review}} hot Bread Kitchen

At first glance Hot Bread Kitchen may look like many other bakeries. Multigrain sandwich loaves, sourdough batards, baguettes, and Parker House rolls line the glass case up front in the small shop. But so, too, do sweet Mexican conchas, rich m’smen flatbreads, mini bialys sporting a filling of caramelized onion, and chewy Indian naan. In fact, the breads are as diverse as the women who bake them—because the recipes come from their homelands.
Hot Bread Kitchen is a bakery that employs and empowers immigrant women, providing them with the skills to succeed in the culinary industry. The tasty corollary of this social enterprise is a line of authentic breads you won’t find anywhere else. Featured in some of New York City’s best restaurants and carried in dozens of retail outlets across the country, these ethnic gems can now be made at home with The Hot Bread Kitchen Cookbook.

*My Review*
As a Foodie, Cajun & Culinary Arts major, I absolutely LOVE this book.
I love the stories of the people and the international flavor of the book are reason to head straight for the kitchen and cook/bake.
The recipes in thos book are all pretty basicfor bread. The pictures are gorgeous and make me want to make  just about every one of these breads. I love all the tips and hints for bread baking that were included, too.
If you love bread, then you will want to check out the Hot Bread Kitchen cookbook. I'm pretty sure you'll be wanting to add these new bread recipes to your baking list after looking though this cookbook.

What's your story? | {{Book Review}} Get Your Story Straight?

We all tell stories to each other---stories about what happened when we were kids, stories about last night, and stories where we dream about the future. Some stories are funny, some are amazing, others are sad, but they all have something in common---each of us is the hero of our own story. Our thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams take center stage. But when it's all about you, it's also all up to you. You have to make life work, find meaning, and hope for the best even when you mess up or things go badly wrong.

But what if we were made for something different? What if the main character in our life story isn't us, but it is the God who became like us and is now with us? What if being fully human means knowing him and growing to be like him? What if the way to be fully alive is to be caught up in Jesus's story?

This 52-week devotional book and small group resource is designed to help you live with Jesus in his gospel story---the good news that your sins are forgiven, your future is assured, and following him is the only meaningful way to live. No matter your age, where you live, who your family is, or what your past, God wants you to experience the freedom that comes in being secure in his love.

Divided into three parts, starting with creation, each section progressively explores the idea that the whole Bible is the unfolding story of Jesus. Through this grid, who Jesus is and why we need him will shape your understanding of freedom and grace and how you grow to be like him. This yearlong study for teenagers and young adults is designed for individual devotional times, but a small group discussion guided by a mentor would help participants to absorb and live out the truths of each week's teaching.

*My Review*
As a mom of three girls(one being a preteen), I am excited about this book. My oldest and I will start doing this Bible study together as part of her daily school work. If you have teens(or preteens), then you will want to have this devotional handy.

Get Your Story Straight is a devotional for teens. It shows them that the story is about Christ. He is the center of every story. After reading this devotional myself, I have found that preteens/teens will learn about the problem of sin and their need for Jesus, what He has done for them through the gospel, and what it means to be "justified by faith". Most importantly they will learn how the gospel transforms all of life.

A page-turning storybook of theology for kids {{Book review}} | The Ology

In the cellar of the old stone cathedral, Carla and Timothy uncover a life-changing treasure, a carefully wrapped ancient book known as The Ology. What adults might describe as a beautifully illustrated storybook of systematic theology, the kids discover to be a story of adventure, mystery, and wonder that leads them to the truth about God, themselves, and the world around them.

Truth is for kids, not just for adults! So The Ology gives kids of all ages a beginner's theology book to help them understand who God is and how we, as his children, relate to him. Arranged within a traditional systematic theological framework, each truth inThe Ology is also connected to the larger redemptive story of Scripture. The doctrine of God, for example, is presented in the larger framework of creation, where the attributes of God are more clearly on display. The Ology takes abstract theological concepts and makes them easier to understand with the use of creative examples, illustrations, and analogies. The goal is not to say everything that could be said about a theological topic, but rather to share the key thoughts behind a theological concept. The Ology is a starting point to learning theology and aims to create a hunger and desire in children to learn more as they grow older.

Designed for six-year-olds through preteens, this flexible resource includes built-in adaptations for use with younger or older children, so that entire families can enjoy it together. Read The Ology to preschoolers, read it with grade-school kids, and let older kids discover the "hidden" truths by reading the corresponding Scripture passages for each section. However you read it, The Ology will give your children a gift that will last a lifetime---a solid foundation of life-changing biblical truth that will point them to the God who loves them and gave himself for them.

*My Review*
"The Ology" is a wonderful way to introduce God to children. This book is a Children's book, so it's geared for early elementary (6-9), but it's also good for upper elementary(10-12). I absolutely love the way this book uses everyday life analogies to help children understand the bigger picture.

One of my favorite parts in this book is "God Is Three in One". Our church was having a study on the Trinity, and how hard it is to comprehend. This book refers to the Trinity as a "jigsaw puzzle".

It says "When you put together a jigsaw puzzle, You have to figure out how all the different pieces fit together to make a picture. God can e like that. The truths that the Bible tells us about God are a little bit like pieces of a puzzle. The more we learn about God, the clearer our picture of HIm will be,the more amazing He becomes to us, and the more we love him"

I love that there are plenty of Scripture for that specific story. A great way for children to learn their Bible verses.

Since we homeschool we COULD use this as a Bible curriculum, but since we already have that through the school we go through, we may add this in with what we already have.

This book would make a great gift, or would fit perfectly in a church classroom or in a church l.ibrary
